About Glaciere Metro Station, Paris

The Glaciere station is located in southern Paris. It serves metro line 6 and fare zone 1 in the 13e.
In ancient times the Bievre River, a Seine tributary, formed small lakes and ponds around Paris where large herds of animals took refuge. As the area became more populated, the icy lakes were used for preservation of food before the refrigerator was invented. The name Glaciere is a constant reminder of these pre-industrial days.
The station is near a spot that Victor Hugo used in Les Miserables where their used to be streets of tanneries. It is now mostly residential in nature and includes Chinatown, many high rise apartment buildings, and the home of the Bibliotheque Francois Mitterand.
Glaciere is also close by the Rive Gauche district, which is being set up to compete with the la Defense business district. Over the next 10 years many important businesses will be moving into the area.
