The Bastille station is located in the eastern half of Paris and provides entrance to metro lines 1, 5 and 8. It is within fare zone 1.
The station is very close to the former location of the famous Bastille prison. Travelers can see some of the castle's remains on Line 5. Most of Line 1's platforms are underground but Bastille features one of the few open air platforms in the city near the Paris Arsenal and Canal Saint Martin.
Upon exiting the station, travelers will come across two major attractions, the Place de la Bastille and the Opera Bastille. The square in Place de la Bastille is where much of the crowd that stormed the prison in 1789 stood. It is also where the commemorative July Column stands to represent the downfall of the loathed prison. Many Bastille Day celebrations take place here too.
There is also a lively nightlife around the Bastille station that includes bars, nightclubs, cafes and restaurants. Travelers won't be bored here during daylight hours either as they can rent boats from the marina, visit the Canal Saint Martin, and Bassin de l'Arsenal marina or shop for fresh foods and flea market finds at the Place de la Bastille's open air markets.
