This station allows for access to the Eastern side of the Retiro, which contains the lake, the Palacio de Cristal with its ever-changing art installations, and the area most used by the city’s many rollerbladers and skateboarders during the weekends. The area itself is mostly residential and fairly quiet, but in the summer it comes alive with open air terraces of the nearby cafes lining the wide streets. There are some excellent restaurants in the area serving high class cuisine, including Arrivederci Roma on Avenida de Menéndez Pelayo for the finest Italian cooking, and La Hacienda Argentina on Calle de Ibiza, whose luxurious red velvet curtains at the entrance denote the opulent Argentinean cooking inside. Stay in the nearby district of Goya to reflect this opulence, in plush hotels such as the NH Alcala or the Occidental Convención Madrid Hotel.
