Madrid's answer to Soho, Chueca's metro station is situated in the middle of the plaza of the same name, surrounded by bars and cafes. This area became the gay centre of Madrid in the 80s and 90s, and is now filled with achingly hip restaurants and shops that are on the cutting edge of European culture. Try Sushi Olé on Calle Válgame Dios for fusion Japanese-Spanish cooking, or Libertad 8 on the street of the same name for live poetry and music in one of the city’s foremost cultural hotspots. It’s a good area for cheaper hotels, and would probably best suit younger travellers looking for a more adventurous nightlife.
