Atocha is a great place for art lovers to stay. At the foot of the famous Paseo del Prado, the station is a stone’s throw from the Reina Sofia museum, home to the works of Picasso, Dalí and hundreds of other pieces of modern artwork. It’s also the closest station for the Prado Museum, unmissable for any culture lover. The lesser known Thyssen-Bornemisza, filling the gaps in art history of the Prado and Reina Sofia, and the smaller contemporary Caixa Forum should not be left out; both are on the Paseo del Prado, well within walking distance. To fill you up before a long day of culture, try the famous bocadillo de calamares, a carb-loaded delight of deep fried squid rings in crusty bread, at El Brillante next to the entrance to the station,
The cheap and cheerful Mediodia Hotel overlooks the Reina Sofia and the charming square in front of it, and has a fantastically old-fashioned façade. More upmarket travellers may prefer the two nearby hotels on the NH chain, or a rental apartment along Calle de Atocha.
